SABBATH (a day of religious observance and abstinence from work)
According to Exodus 20: 8 “Remember my sabbath and keep it holy.” for God is holy and so we too shall be holy. As I am studying the bible to have a deeper understanding of what would Jesus do? As I am aiming to be more like him; I know for sure I was born in sin and shaped inequity and at no point will I ever be completely like him but I can always try. I have discovered in my reading various scriptures which leads me to believe that the sabbath is the 7th day which is concluded to be Saturday. Yet many worship on the 1st day which is concluded to be Sunday. I keep asking myself why is this? I had no answer truly and I was raised worshipping on a Sunday myself so am I wrong? Is every Sunday worshipper wrong? Hmmmm let us dive into the word of God to find the answer. Wait!!!! Before we do so I should say I have asked a few people whose answer I value for this answer and I am still left with this feeling; I believe that along the line we created our narrative to back the reasons for our actions. I have plenty other people I would ask but they are probably busy so I decided to ask God himself to help me locate the truth. Was the sabbath changed and if so, who changed it? Does it mean we pick a day and worship or should we be completely sold out on the day God himself chose. So, in Genesis 2: 1-3 it states “Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. 2 And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made. 3 And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.” This scriptural passage and verse informed me that God rested on the seventh day bless the day and made it holy. Again 7th is mentioned which is a Saturday and this scripture is the beginning of the sabbath. Does God need rest I highly doubt it but that’s my opinion so do not quote me. Let us continue to seek the truth from the bible about the sabbath many would say Jesus did not honor the sabbath because in the book of Mark he was questioned by the religious leaders when his disciples began to pick grain about them working on the sabbath and he stated in the second chapter verses 27-28 “The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath: 28 therefore the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath.” This verse is not argued that the sabbath is the day man chooses but as for my understanding I would say just in the way he said his disciples did not need to fast because he was with them, he is making the same reference here that he is God who created the sabbath; so how would the religious leaders teach the creator about a day he created he would already have the knowledge about it. And as for man was not created for the sabbath but the sabbath for man that was said because it was created so we can take time to acknowledge God and receive his blessings while dwelling in his presence. Often times we get so caught up in our ways as you can see even as I write the truth from the bible, I am still putting words such as I believe, in my opinion and my understanding but honestly, I am acting out of caution as I do not want to say God said something he did not say he has warned us in Jeremiah 23what will happen to those who says thus said the Lord when he did not speak. But as a said people will say he did not honor the sabbath but as Luke 4: 16 states “And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read.” It is very clear that Jesus himself kept his custom to worship on the day of the sabbath. So, who are we the people to not keep it? I for one is just simply seeking biblical truth to be honest I am a great sinner. I have sinned so many times I tell everyone God shake his head at me all the time. Even when I try really hard, I find myself sinning; so, let’s be clear I am not here to judge or change anyone mind about there day to worship God I just want to do my best to follow God’s word. In the bible Matthew 15 vs 7-9 states “Ye hypocrites, well did Esaias prophesy of you saying, this people draweth nigh unto me with there mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me. But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.” I do not want to be apart of this prophesy I only want what God wants for me. Please Lord teach me your will and your way so that I will not be lead astray from what you desire for my life I ask this in your name the name of Jesus amen. As I kept seeking the truth the more it is revealed to me in the book of Exodus 31: 12-17 “12 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, 13Speak thou also unto the children of Israel, saying, Verily my sabbaths ye shall keep: for it is a sign between me and you throughout your generations; that ye may know that I am the LORD that doth sanctify you.14 Ye shall keep the sabbath therefore; for it is holy unto you: every one that defileth it shall surely be put to death: for whosoever doeth any work therein, that soul shall be cut off from among his people. 15 Six days may work be done; but in the seventh is the sabbath of rest, holy to the LORD: whosoever doeth any work in the sabbath day, he shall surely be put to death. 16Wherefore the children of Israel shall keep the sabbath, to observe the sabbath throughout their generations, for a perpetual covenant. 17 It is a sign between me and the children of Israel for ever: for in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day he rested, and was refreshed.” I do not know about you but after reading this I am very happy God is a forgiving God and that he knew we would mess up so he soften the commandment when he made the shift from, thou shall to remember because he knew we would forget and would not keep his sabbath holy. I for one has worked for seven days without rest and I know I am not alone in that aspect. I will work hard to do better please forgive me oh Lord for my transgression. Please remind me when I fall away from you; please continue to chase after me and please continue to help me to stay on the right path. I only want to be apart of the alpha and omega kingdom John 8: 47 states “He that is of God heareth God's words: ye therefore hear them not, because ye are not of God.” Open my ears to hear your word; to even imagine I am not of you is a life I never want to live. Open my heart to not do what everyone else is doing but to only do what you say. For you said in Matthew 7: 13-14 “Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in there at14 because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.” Help me to be among the few who finds your truth and live by it; so many times I have strayed away, so many times I get distracted from your calling for my life but as I sit here writing I am so thankful that I am among the living so I can ask you for one more chance; I can ask you once more to forgive me I can ask you once mean to lead me. Decrease me Lord so that you can increase in my life I will love you forever. Jesus really intended for us to keep the sabbath and again this demonstration is seen in Matthew 24: 20 “But pray ye that your flight be not in the winter, neither on the sabbath day:” While Jesus was talking about the great tribulation that will someday manifest on earth, he was saying to the people to pray that your flight isn’t on a sabbath day because he himself knew that was a day of worship. I was completely unaware so many scriptures spoke of the sabbath and how the disciples of God followed in his foot step John wrote in the book of Revelation 1: 10 saying “I was in the Spirit on the Lord’s Day, and heard behind me a great voice, as of a trumpet.” So clearly, we know there is a day belonging to God a specific day or else he would have said I was in spirit on a day of my choosing. So again, I ask which day is it that belongs to our God? Are we showing reverence to his day? Saul who was later called Paul followed the footsteps of Jesus once he was converted in the book of Acts which made many references of the sabbath which I will later post but as for now let us focus on Acts 17:2 “and Paul, as his manner was, went in unto them, and three sabbath days reasoned with them out of the scriptures,” clearly you see he kept the sabbath because the scripture said it was his manner to do so. So, as they kept the sabbath I so will do my best to keep the sabbath as I want to serve God in spirit and in truth as the bible say we should do. I will set aside work and give God my time. In this time that we are living it is completely challenging as this is a work first place. Most employer requires you to work on the days of their choosing and make it difficult for you to follow your religious principle but if you can give your energy and time to God completely on the day of rest, I reckon with you to please do so. Hebrews 4: 9-11 states “There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God; 10 for anyone who enters God’s rest also rests from their works, just as God did from his. 11nLet us, therefore, make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one will perish by following their example of disobedience.” Today I am spending time asking God to deliver me from disobedience so that I will not fall short of his glory. Paul and Silas had an expectation that on the sabbath they would find others praying to God this can be seen in Acts 16:13 “On the Sabbath we went outside the city gate to the river, where we expected to find a place of prayer. We sat down and began to speak to the women who had gathered there.” Paul and Silas went among those who prayed on the sabbath day and we also can keep the sabbath because we are serving the same God and he requires us to keep the sabbath holy. In Acts 18:4 “Every Sabbath he reasoned in the synagogue, trying to persuade Jews and Greeks.” Paul spent his time working with the tentmakers and on the sabbath days he was preaching to the Jews and Greeks that Jesus was the Messiah. We too should spend time preaching that Jesus is the Messiah he’s the one who came to save and set us free from the bondage of sin. I am only writing my thoughts along with the scriptures of the bible if you happen to come across this message you can determine for yourself which day is the sabbath and how will you honor it.
